Karri Knowles
At first my husband and I were very hesitant to hire a doula. We wanted a very private birth, and my husband felt that he could handle the coaching aspect on his own. But we went ahead and hired Karri, and we are so glad we did! She came to our house twice before our baby was born and taught us relaxation techniques, massage techniques and helped us put together a birth plan. She went walking with me the week before our baby was born where we had a chance to talk more and helped to put me in the right state of mind. The birth of our child was long (3 days total from time my water broke to his birth) and she was there every step of the way. She offered lots of encouragement, suggestions for making me more comfortable, and most of all reassured my husband and family. She also provided constant updates to my family waiting in the hall. She was there for the birth, took pictures to document the whole thing, and came back the next two days in the hospital to help with breast feeding and bring me anything else I might need. After being home for a week with the baby, she came to see me and offered to help with anything I needed.
Having Karri was a blessing. She is a very kind, warm-hearted person who can calm anyone. Hiring a doula doesn't mean your husband/partner can't handle the coaching on their own, it means they can take breaks, rest. All members of my family also commented on how much Karri helped my family and me through a difficult birth experience. If I have more children, I will be sure Karri is by my side!
